Arcato
for viola solo
"Arcato" is an artificial word freely associating the movement of the bow and the arc of music itself. An initial broad sweep down three octaves defines the tonal space, tumbling in a uncertain manner around pilot tones, finding a low point which in itself bears the power to continue upwards, finishing on the highest note of the piece virtually in that moment, when a far away arrival point comes into our view. This cutoff end is a moment of highest concentration, depicting the moment of realease in the art of archery.
